HOW TO USE
You can easily add Flaxseed to a variety of dishes including your breakfast cereal, oatmeal, muesli or yoghurt. Also add it to salads, smoothies and your baking.
Ground half a cup of flaxseed using a coffee grinder or high speed blender just before consumption – this allows better absorption thus giving you more of the benefits. It’s best to use it straight after grinding as this reduces the risk of oxidation. Alternatively, once grounded store in a air-tight container in the fridge, use within a day or two.
You can use whole flaxseed but it may be a little hard to digest completely due to their tough outer hull that keeps them from breaking down in your digestive tract. So the best way to use them whole is to soak them before using – they contain gelling properties that gel up when combined with liquid.
EGG SUBSTITUTE
Mixing flaxseed and water together creates a gelatinous mix perfect for binding.
Mix 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds with 3 tablespoon of warm water and let swell for five minutes and your plant-based /vegan egg substitute is ready! Chia Seeds can also be used for a great egg substitution.
FLAXSEED MILK
Flaxseed milk is a delicious dairy-free milk option – lactose free and no cholesterol.
Start by soaking 1/2 cup of flaxseeds in fresh water overnight then sieve them to remove the gel. Rinse well with filtered water. Put flaxseed and 4 1/2 cups of filtered water into a high speed blender and blend approx. 20 seconds or until your desired consistency, strain into a glass bottle using cheese cloth or a nut bag and keep in fridge up to 3 days.
